Camping is an affordable and great way to enjoy nature, bond with your family, and connect with friends. When traveling on campervans, you access the pristine natural setting, with a kitchen and bed all on hand. You can also get the smallest camper van with bathroom and offroad capabilities to experience rural life, small towns, and difficult-to-reach destinations. If you’re thinking of jumping the bandwagon to take a campervan adventure, you’ll need to avoid the mistakes below.
Ignoring the Weather
While you technically sleep indoors in the van, it doesn’t mean you aren’t susceptible to the sudden extreme change in weather conditions. Even vans with build-in insulations can get cold, mostly at night as temperature drops. During summer, the opposite is true as metal boxes on wheels can heat up fast.
If possible, consider having the trip during shoulder seasons ( fall and spring) to maximize the enjoyment. Also, ensure the forecast does call for too much rainfall since you might get trapped inside the van to ruin the trip. When you can’t avoid extreme weather, get yourself sturdy outdoor gear. Some rubber boots and thick coats might turn the rainy season into a fun adventure.
Over Planning
Van life is fun as there are no rules. When on caravan travel, you only have a few responsibilities. If you get tired, you can pull over and have a nap on the full-sized bed. However, planning too much detracts your freedom on the trip. Having strict agendas might lead to fatigue from too much driving to keep up with scheduled stops.
Spending Too Much Time Alone
When you hit the road solo, the isolation can suck the joy out of the van life. You might get focused on viewing sites, having a good time while on the trip, and other logistics to forget human interaction. To help out, make an effort to make friends. You can say hi to neighbors and invite them over for card games, dinner, or a campsite party when at the campsite.
Unfortunately, since you travel in a campervan, relations might be transient. However, some people can become social media friends or those you can call for companionship. Even when traveling with a partner, some couples can get stuck together for long periods and lose track of the reason for the trip.
Forgetting to Download a Map Before Your Trip
While the map app or GPS on the smartphone is a must-have for the trip, you’ll want to ensure you have a backup plan. If you travel somewhere remote, be sure to download instructions or maps before time if you don’t access cell service when on the trip.
